Paintings and Works in Clay
Ms. Maurer is an artist living and working in Wethersfield,CT where she and her husband Frank, are partners in a graphic design studio called Maurer Designs. She is a graduate of Central Connecticut State University where she received a degree in Fine Arts.
Ellen Maurer will exhibit her paintings and works in clay in the Pinney Gallery at the Kent Memorial Library from February 22nd to March 29th. Large format acrylic paintings on canvas have been Ms. Maurers focus for about 15 years. She uses an earthy palette combined with charcoal, graphite and pastels in a unique mixed media approach. She works from life, photographs, or memory. All of the paintings in her show are recent works. Ms. Maurer says "The elements in the composition work together in her paintings to narrate the scene." The tales they tell vary upon the interpretation of the viewer.
In addition to her paintings, she has also been working with clay for about 10 years. Her current series of ceramic wall pieces is based on Celtic artifacts, designs and folklore using a combination of tree branches, jute, glass and clay. Of her clay work Ms. Maurer says "My ceramic works feed ideas for paintings and vice versa which, I believe, allows both art forms to work together expressing similar ideas."
A reception for Ms. Maurer is planned for March 8th, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
