Suffield Artist Returns to KML Gallery
as an Author!
Suffield’s
own award-winning artist and illustrator Laurie Tavino will be presenting an updated version of her successful show, “Tales
From The East Side”, a retrospective of life in Thompsonville and Suffield’s
Old
Bridge neighborhood. The new exhibit will incorporate a wealth of material
gathered from neighbors, friends, and businesses, much of which was used in her recently published book, “Suffield’s
Old Bridge Neighborhood”. The book was inspired by the public response to the 2007 Library exhibit.
Laurie Tavino
is a long-time resident of the neighborhood featured in the book, and has developed an
appreciation of her Italian heritage, and tales of local history. A granddaughter of Italian immigrants, she grew up on the
family farm in a culturally diverse neighborhood in Suffield at the west end of the old Suffield-Thompsonville bridge. Over
the years she gathered photographs and mementoes of those early days which provided much
of the material for the original show.
The new show adds more photos and
items obtained through the generosity of many in the community. Employing her graphic design skills with these items results
in an informative, interesting, and dynamic visual “walk” through an important part of Suffield’s early
history. The show is slated for the Pinney Gallery in Suffield’s Kent Memorial Library during November, opening on Nov.
2nd, closing the 28th.
A “Meet the Author”
Reception and Book Signing is scheduled at the Library on Saturday, November 7th, from 1-4 PM. Copies of the book
will be available for sale.
Ms. Tavino is a graduate of Arizona
State University, a member of the West Hartford Art League, River Valley Illustrators, Tobacco Valley Artists Association,
Friends of the Farm at Hilltop, The Suffield Historical Society, Enfield Historical Society, and Mount Carmel Women’s
Auxiliary. Her paintings have garnered many awards throughout the area, are prized by collectors, and featured in many homes
and businesses. Laurie offers art lessons in her home studio.
This presentation is made possible
through the efforts of the artist and author, the Suffield Arts Council, and the staff of Suffield’s Kent Memorial Library.
